A 250kg male tapir was found dead on Jalan Kuala Terengganu-Kuantan, with injuries suggesting it was hit by a vehicle, say wildlife officials

CHUKAI: A male tapir was found dead on Jalan Kuala Terengganu-Kuantan near a lemang stall in Kijal today.

The 250-kilogramme animal is believed to have been hit by a vehicle, according to the Terengganu Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan).

Director Loo Kean Seong said the carcass was discovered by a road user at about 11.40 am.

“The results of the inspection found that there were injury marks on the mouth, legs and body of the wildlife carcass,” he said.

Four Perhilitan personnel from the Kemaman district later removed the tapir carcass for disposal.

Loo advised all road users to exercise caution and be aware of wildlife crossing areas.
