THE Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) on Thursday confirmed that the mall security guard who threw a puppy named Browny from a footbridge in Quezon City in 2023 was found guilty, beyond reasonable doubt, under Republic Act 8485 or the Animal Welfare Act of 1998.
In a Facebook statement, AKF said the guard is expected to serve one and a half to two years in prison.
He will also be fined P100,000, and if he fails to pay, “subsidiary imprisonment” will be applied against the mall guard.
“Accused is likewise held civilly liable and must compensate the owner of Browny, the amount of P20,000 by way of moral damages. Said amount shall earn 6-percent legal interest per annum due from finality of judgment of this decision until fully paid,” the rights group said.
AKF was among several animal rights groups that also included the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), which took action against the mall guard, who tossed Browny in July 2023 off the footbridge after an altercation with street children who had the puppy with them.
