LAHAD DATU: A 63-year-old local man was arrested for allegedly stealing a mobile phone from a restaurant in Bandar Sri Perdana, Sept 2.

District Police Chief ACP Dzulbaharin Ismail said the theft was discovered around 12.30pm when one of the restaurant workers noticed his mobile phone was missing.

CCTV footage revealed a man taking the phone from the restaurant’s payment counter.

“Acting on the information, a police team from the Crime Investigation Division detained the suspect around 11am on Thursday by the roadside in Kampung Puyut, Jalan Panji,” said Dzulbaharin.

The stolen phone was recovered, and a urine test later showed the suspect tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to 10 years’ imprisonment, a fine, and whipping for repeat offenders.

The suspect is currently remanded at the Lahad Datu Court for further investigation.

Police reiterated their commitment to tackling crime in the district and urged the public to report any suspicious activities.
