Vienna dpa) - An 88-year-old man in Austria fatally shot his wife, 89 and their 61-year-old daughter on Thursday on a street in the city of Linz, police said

A farewell letter was found at the scene outside an inn. Police initially did not comment on a possible motive for the killing, but said the elderly mother and her daughter had been living in Germany and were visiting.

Police said the weapon used was an old handgun. It was found at the scene and the man had legally owned it, police said.

Justice Minister Anna Sporrer and Women's Minister Eva-Maria Holzleitner said they were shocked by the latest killing of women by a man from their inner circle, the APA news agency reported.

"Guns do not belong in homes and not on the street, not unsecured in public or private spaces," the Social Democrats said in a statement.
