Kota Kinabalu: A man and his wife were charged with operating moneylender business without permit.

Tan Chee Huat, 47, and his wife Nathalie Chung Mei Nee, 38, pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus, Wednesday.

Tan and Chung are accused of operating the business without a valid license in April 2019 in Kudat.

The couple is charged under Section 5(2) of the Moneylenders Act 1951 and read with Section 34 of the Penal Code which provides for a fine of between RM250,000 and RM1million, or a jail term of up to five years, or both, and liability to whipping if repeating the offence, on conviction.

Read more The court set Nov 21 for pre-trial case management and released them on bail of RM15,000 with RM5,000 deposited in two local sureties each.

Tan and Chung were ordered to report to the Kudat police station once a month and surrendered their passports, if any, to the court until the disposal of their case.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Hajar Mazlan appeared for the prosecution while the couple was not represented.
