Man arrested for vandalising place of worship while under influence of drugs and alcohol

A LOCAL man suspected of being under the influence of drugs and alcohol was arrested after committing an act of vandalism at a place of worship on Jalan Merdeka, Kampung Baru Ampang, on Tuesday morning.

Ampang Jaya District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam said the incident occurred at about 9am when the complainant, a 49-year-old member of the Malaysian Volunteer Corps (Rela), heard a commotion at a restaurant located within the temple grounds.

“The complainant went to the scene and found a man believed to be intoxicated, talking to himself and behaving incoherently. The complainant advised the man to leave and not to make noise in the vicinity of the place of worship.

However, the suspect pushed over an incense burner, scattering ashes across the floor,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

The complainant then detained the man and contacted the police for assistance.

“A police team from the Ampang Police Station arrived at 9.20am and took custody of the 35-year-old suspect, who was handed over by the complainant. Checks revealed that the suspect had eight previous records related to drug offences,” Mohd Azam said.

A urine test later confirmed that the man tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.

“Further investigations revealed that the suspect committed the act of vandalism while under the influence of drugs and alcohol,” he added.

Police have applied for a remand order at the Ampang Magistrates’ Court to assist investigations under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief. - October 29, 2025
