A MAN has been arrested in Ipoh after a video showing him savagely beating a pet dog to death with a metal rod at a residence in Taman Arkid went viral on social media, prompting widespread condemnation.
The one-minute and thirty-one second clip, uploaded to Instagram by the Malaysian Animal Organization, shows the man chasing and striking the defenceless dog repeatedly with a rod, ignoring attempts to stop him. The dog was left bloodied and died from its injuries.
Ipoh District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad, confirmed that a police report was lodged on 19 September at Menglembu Police Station.
“The suspect is currently out on police bail while further investigations are ongoing,” he said in a statement on Monday.
The case is being investigated under Section 29(1)(a) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 for cruelty to animals. In addition, the suspect is also being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation involving threats made against family members.
“Police take all cases of animal abuse seriously and will work closely with the relevant agencies to ensure appropriate action is taken,” said Abang Zainal.
The authorities have advised the public not to circulate the video further, warning that doing so may cause unnecessary public alarm.
Members of the public with information related to animal abuse are urged to contact the police or the Department of Veterinary Services (JPV) to assist with ongoing investigations. - September 29, 2025
