A 21-year-old woman endured a terrifying ordeal in the early hours of January 2, 2026, after an intoxicated man allegedly broke into her rented room in a Cheras condominium and sexually assaulted her while she was asleep. The incident has raised renewed concerns about residential safety, particularly in high-rise buildings.

The assault is believed to have occurred at around 8.50am at a unit located on the 15th floor of the residence. The victim was asleep in her bedroom when she was abruptly awakened by the weight of an unknown man on top of her. Realising that a stranger had entered her private space, she began screaming in distress.

Sources familiar with the case indicated that the suspect attempted to deflect responsibility by claiming he had mistakenly entered the wrong room. The explanation failed to calm the situation, and the victim immediately sought help. She contacted her housing agent to report the intrusion before alerting the police to the alleged assault.

A formal police report was lodged at 11.20am on January 2, 2026. Acting on the complaint, officers moved quickly and detained a 24-year-old man later the same day. Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus confirmed the arrest and said initial investigations found the suspect to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

According to police findings, the suspect works at a video game outlet and had earlier been visiting a friend who lives in the same condominium. Investigators believe he later wandered into the victim’s unit before entering her bedroom, leading to the alleged assault.

Following his arrest, the suspect was remanded for four days beginning January 2 and ending January 5, 2026, to facilitate further investigation. Authorities are examining how he gained access to the unit and whether any security lapses within the building contributed to the incident.

The case is being investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code, which relates to assault or criminal force with intent to outrage modesty. If found guilty, the offence carries serious legal consequences, including imprisonment and possible fines.
