Man charged with cheating another of RM30,000

Kota Kinabalu: A 54-year-old man was charged at the Magistrate’s Court here, Tuesday, with cheating a man of RM30,000 over a building upgrade project.

Roderick Noel N. Rodriquey pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to cheating one Tham Chee Hsung by making him believe that he (the accused) could hand over the Sabah State Assembly building upgrade project to him and fraudulently induce Tham to hand over RM30,000 into a bank account under another man’s name.

The offence was allegedly committed on March 30 this year at The Peak Condominium lobby here.

The offence was framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of between one year and 10 years and with whipping and liability of a fine on conviction.

Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik, prosecuting, in applying for a case management date proposed bail at RM3,000 in two sureties.

Counsel Sylyester Kuan, representing Roderick, applied for a lower bail on the grounds that he is bankrupt thus not a flight risk and also has a health issue.

The court set Oct 4 for case management and released the accused on a bail of RM1,000 undeposited in one surety.

Meanwhile, a 31-year-old man was fined RM4,000 or 10 months jail for disposing of a stolen property

Md Hishyam Hanapi admitted before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to hiding a stolen camera belonging to Kilanas Sdn Bhd Metrotown at 3pm on July 14, this year at kg Cenderakasih, Luyang.

He was charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both on conviction.

Inspector Albert Basiri prosecuted.
