A 43-year-old man who was charged with the murder of his mother was today ordered by the Magistrate's Court to undergo a month-long mental health evaluation.
Magistrate Nur Syifa Mohd Hamzah issued the order for Abd Rahman Harun after the prosecution requested that the defendant undergo a mental assessment before any formal plea could be recorded.
Abd Rahman is accused of murdering his 68-year-old mother, Isah Salleh, at their home in Kampung Bok-Bok, Mukim Derga, between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. on March 2. He faces charges under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or a maximum 40-year prison sentence, along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.
No plea was recorded during the proceedings, and the accused, dressed in a grey T-shirt, simply nodded in understanding as the charges were read to him.
Following the court hearing, the Magistrate ordered Abd Rahman to be sent to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta for a mental health evaluation to determine whether he suffers from any mental health issues.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Huda Diyanah Amir Hamzah handled the prosecution, while the defendant has not yet been represented by a lawyer.
The case is set to be revisited on April 10, when the court will receive an update on the status of the mental health assessment report. – March 9, 2025
