Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola defended Kalvin Phillips after his poor display against Southampton.

The ex-Leeds United midfielder has been out of the City team for much of this season due to injury issues.

Phillips was then lambasted in public by Guardiola for turning up overweight after the World Cup.

"He needs time, a lot of time injured," said Guardiola of Phillips after the shock 2-0 loss to the Saints in the League Cup quarter finals this week.

"It's not about Kalvin or this player or the other one, when you have nights like today it's the responsibility for everyone.

“First the manager of course, but everyone."
