Enzo Maresca met the media at a press conference for the first time since his club, Manchester City, were found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s financial rules by an independent commission.
Over the international break, the commission’s verdict that Man City were guilty of 114 rules breaches was announced and the club have since appealed against the decision. City face a trip to Anfield on Sunday in what is expected to be a hostile atmosphere, with Liverpool one of the teams most affected by City’s “sham” contracts and disguised funding that amounted to more than £900m over a nine-year period between 2009 and 2018.
Maresca has reiterated his “complete trust” in the club and is focused on his players as off-field matters plunged City into crisis. He also admitted that it had been a major topic of conversation within the group.
Elsewhere, Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola gave his thoughts on the game and City’s verdict while Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta, who worked for City as an assistant to Pep Guardiola, also threw his support behind the club’s owners.

It was announced over the international break that an independent commission deemed Man City guilty of 114 financial rule breaches, with the club using “sham” contracts and disguised funding that amounted to more than £900m over a nine-year period between 2009 and 2018.

Should Man City have titles removed?
14:24 , Mike JonesMichael Carrick was asked how he would feel if Man City had their titles revoked due to breaching financial rules.
Carrick would have won the Premier League in the 2011/12 as a players as his United side finished second on goal difference to City.
Carrick replied: "I think when you're in sport, certainly in football, I think the strive to win and the emotion, the feeling about winning is a lot of it is in the moment.
"Whether you're successful, whether you lose, whether it goes against you the beauty of sport and the beauty of football and the beauty of trying to win trophies here is a little bit on the journey towards it and then the finale, you know, and does it go for you, does it go against you?
"Once that's done, there's no getting that back in any direction. That's the feeling we all crave is coming out on top. That kind of sums it up, you know, whatever's done in the past tense done in the past, but in that moment is how you feel in that moment.
"Certainly as a participant, as a performer, and I'm sure the supporters feel the same, that's why we love it so much because of the emotion in the moment."
Xabi Alonso's thoughts on Man City
14:20 , Mike JonesThe Chelsea manager said: "For sure it is a decision but we need to be patient. We need to wait for the final sanctions from the panel. I think they are independent enough to assess all the situations. I am not an expert, whatever I say and whatever opinion I have they are the ones to take it. We need to respect the decision and we have to be patient for sure.
"We need to wait for the final announcement on the actions and we will see what happens. It is out of our hands, we have to respect the independence of the panel and see what happens."
Carrick on Man City charges
14:05 , Mike JonesOf course Michael Carrick was asked about the charges and guilty verdict for Manchester City.
He answered: "Very difficult to say in many ways. It's thrown up a lot of questions, some have had answers, some haven't. As it's still ongoing, and we don't how long it's going to go, there's only so much I can say.
"Certainly I've got my own questions about it, it's affected me personally in different ways over a period of time. But as the case is going now I don't know where that stands and how it's going to end up, so we'll just have to wait and see.
"What I will say, the sooner it gets sorted I think for everyone's benefit is essential."
Mixed bag of injuries for Man Utd
14:00 , Mike JonesSwitching the focus over to Manchester United now and some of the intriguing comments from manager Michael Carrick.
First up though, he spoke about the injuries in his squad.
"It's a bit mixed really through the internationals. Patrick [Dorgu] came off and it looks like he'll be out probably for a number of weeks.
"Noussair Mazraoui came off and took a knock. He's not quite right yet, we'll have to see how he is.
"Carlos Beleba is improving. He's trained a lot.
"Amad Diallo has done a little bit of training. Marcus [Rashford] has done a little bit of training. Kobbie [Mainoo] has done a little bit of training.
"Benjamin [Sesko] is a little further a way with the issue he's got. He'll be a little bit further away."
Iraola on Jacquet
13:56 , Mike JonesJeremy Jacquet will be available for Liverpool this weekend despite missing a match for France during the international break.
"He's done really well. Firstly because he is a very good player, obviously you know Jacquet and you see clips of him but until you have him in everyday training you can' really appreciate what he has,” he said.
"I am very happy for him personally because to make a debut in the national team, in a team like France who is difficult to have a chance [in], and I think he played really well and he should be happy. But still he has a long way to go."
'We have to be ready' says Iraola of City contest
13:53 , Mike JonesMan City travel to Anfield on Sunday and Andoni Iraola says his team need to be ready for the current Premier League leaders.
"Every game is an exciting game. We are playing at home at Anfield against City who is top of the league right now,” said the Liverpool boss.
“They have won all of their games and I think we will go for the game.
“I think it will be quite an open game and we have to be ready and also use the help from our supporters and I hope we are at the level of the game that's going to be high."
Could Lewis Koumas start for Liverpool?
13:49 , Mike Jones"Koumas has our trust,” Iraola said.
“I don't think it's a big surprise, I always liked the player and he has already shown in important minutes that he has ready to go and we have also other players who can go in those positions."
No Isak or Gakpo
13:46 , Mike JonesIn a huge blow to Liverpool, the Reds will be without Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo for the clash with Man City.
Gakpo is out with an ankle injury says Iraola while Isak has a “small” thigh injury.
Of Gakpo, Iraola says it is a “matter of him dealing with the pain.”
A crucial run of games
13:43 , Mike JonesAndoni Iraola spoke about Liverpool’s start to the season and the next run of games which will be difficult.
He said: "It looks very good after you see we had those two draws at the beginning not so good, but I think this run of games we have now between the international breaks, the demand of those games is really high.
"I think we play against the top four in the league, Champions League games, the Carabao Cup game against Chelsea and also very condensed. I think now it's four games in 10 days.
"I think we will see a lot about us after this run of games. We will know better where we really are."
Liverpool will wait for Man City appeal
13:35 , Mike JonesAndoni Iraola explained: "I think uncertainty is not good for anyone and anyone involved, but the process is ongoing and we have to patient like everyone else and see what happens at the end."
Welcome back!
13:33 , Mike JonesLiverpool manager Andoni Iraola is addressing the media and is immediately asked about the Man City case.
“It’s not good for anyone he says” before adding that we need to wait for the outcome of the proceedings to conclude.

Still to come
12:50 , Mike JonesWith Enzo Maresca’s press conference done and dusted we can turn some attention to what will be happening this afternoon.
There are press conferences from Mikel Arteta and Arsenal as well as Michael Carrick at Manchester United.
Both of those are scheduled for 1.30pm and we’ll have the updates from both.
Up next for Man City
12:40 , Mike JonesAll the talk this morning has been around Manchester City and how they were found guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules.
Enzo Maresca answered the questions confidently and now has his sights on Sunday’s match with Liverpool.
Liverpool vs Man City takes place at 4.30pm on Sunday and will be shown live on Sky Sports.
Erling Haaland sends message to Man City fans after Premier League verdict
12:30 , Mike JonesErling Haaland has urged Manchester City to “stick together and stay positive” as they prepare to return to action for the first time since being found guilty of more than 100 breaches of Premier League financial rules.
City have insisted they are innocent and have submitted an appeal, but speculation has been rife across football as to the sanctions they might face after an independent commission said they broke the rules between 2009-10 and 2017-18.
Erling Haaland sends message to Man City fans after Premier League verdict
Has Enzo Maresca read the commission's verdict?
12:24 , Mike JonesThe Man City boss said: "I trust the club, because I know the people but I promise you that my focus is just about football.
"I'm not thinking about different things, first of all because I don't understand many things about different things so I just focus on the things I can control and that is the football side."
'Football has rules'
12:18 , Mike JonesSunderland’s Regis Le Bris, meanwhile, said things without saying things.
He explained: “There are still ongoing legal proceedings so it’s not for me to comment on that.
“My position is simple: football has rules, on and off the pitch. You have to respect those rules, when they are broken they should have consequences otherwise it’s not fair. We want fair competition, we want fair game, fair play, so the relevant authorities have to be relentless otherwise you lose the value of the competition.
“So we’ll see. It happened 10 years ago, more or less. We were not here in Sunderland, for example. But it’s about respecting rules so it’s key because if you don’t have fair competition it’s a bit weird, so it’s more or less the feeling we have in the building.”
'I am unable to judge'
12:12 , Mike JonesNewcastle United’s boss, Matthias Jaissle, said: “I think as a manager of another club I am not able to judge. It’s not my job in my job description to judge on that.
“There are authorities taking care of it. I think there is a clear process now, which we have followed and, for us, I am speaking on behalf of the whole club, it’s the right approach to focus on what we can influence.”
'It's not my topic'
12:06 , Mike JonesResfusing to be drawn into the Man City case seems to be the stance taken by the majority of Premier League bosses.
Leeds’ Daniel Farke said: “It’s not my topic, my topic is football and there are more qualified people to speak about this, so it is not my topic. It is not up to me and I was not involved in the title race in these years. I had different topics to deal with during this time when Manchester City won many titles.
“I think I just had one home game with them with Norwich, we won by the way, so I can’t complain too much. It also makes no sense if right now everyone in the world wants to have opinions about this topic, there are more qualified people to talk about it. My topic is Leeds United.”
Thoughts from Bournemouth boss
12:00 , Mike JonesBournemouth’s manager Marco Rose was also asked about the Man City case.
“I’m not this kind of guy who blames someone with not enough information,” he said.
“Of course, I hear everything, I read everything, but I do not have all the information. I trust in the guys who are involved in these kinds of things and situations, and then we will see what happens.
“I’m a football coach, not a politician, and I love to be a football coach, and it should stay like this.”
Views from around the Premier League
11:54 , Mike JonesBrighton manager Fabian Hurzeler spoke this morning and was, of course, asked about the Man City case.
He said: "I can't control anything from that. The only thing I can really focus on is our preperation, how we are doing, and therefore it is just a distraction that is not in our hands.
"Hopefully it will be dealt with but my topic and I have enough topics to mention.
"Let's see how it's going. What I heard is that there is still some ongoing processes so therefore it is really difficult to say anything now.
"If there is nothing clear we should really focus on ourselves and if there are results we can speak again."
Vincent Kompany 'proud' of Man City success despite guilty verdict on Premier League rule breaches
11:48 , Mike JonesVincent Kompany has said he still feels “proud” of what Manchester City achieved during his time there, after an independent commission found the club guilty of more than 100 breaches of Premier League financial rules.
The breaches covered nine seasons, from 2009-10 to 2017-18.
Kompany, who is now Bayern Munich head coach, was City's captain during a spell of more than a decade at the club. He joined in 2008 and left in 2019, a period in which he won the Premier League four times.

Maresca on Ruben Dias and Erling Haaland
11:42 , Mike JonesHe said: "They need to help their teammates and they are doing that.
“But again I understand that you want to hear or listen to different words from me, but the real words is that the players, the noise is there but they are 20, 25 years old, they enjoy their training, they go home happy, they are top of the league, so they are relaxed.
“They are just thinking about how to beat Liverpool and hopefully we are going to try."
Maresca would have joined Man City even if the guilty verdict was known
11:36 , Mike JonesAnother moment of eye-raising admission came when Enzo Maresca was asked if he would have still joined Man City if the guilty verdict had been announced before he signed a contract.
"100%,” he said before adding: "I know the organisation from years ago, I know how serious they are, I know they do the right things. I would like to speak about this when we win the appeal."
Maresca will 'manage the noise'
11:30 , Mike JonesOne of the questions asked of the Man City boss is whether he can recapture the feeling that the club produced after the charges were first revealed in February 2023.
He responded: "Exactly the same way just try to manage the noise, because we understand the seriousness of the situation, we understand the noise completely 100% it's something serious.
“But at the same time we need to manage that and we need to focus on what we can do and we can control and we can prepare for the game in the best way and go to Anfield and win the game."
Defiant Enzo Maresca makes Man City vow after Premier League guilty verdict
11:24 , Richard JollyThe Manchester City manager, speaking for the first time since the verdict was revealed, emphasised his trust in his employers.

An interesting intervention
11:18 , Mike JonesThere was one part of the press conference that was interesting.
Enzo Maresca had batted away questions about the verdict and what might happen next and one of the questions asked if Manchester City’s chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak or City Group CEO Ferran Soriano should be here instead.
Before Maresca could respond, the Man City press officer intervened by saying: "This is the Liverpool presser."
Maresca on Guardiola
11:12 , Mike JonesPep Guardiola, who managed Manchester City during some of the seasons that they were found guilty to have breached the Premier League rules, is returning to the club on Tuesday to watch the Champions League match against PSG.
Maresca was asked about Guardiola’s return and said: "I spoke with Pep the last time after Manchester United game, after the derby. That was the last time I spoke with Pep. But I know that he is coming on Tuesday.
"It's always a pleasure. After 10 years time he can come any time he wants. Not just for game, for training session, at any moment. It will be nice for him, it will be nice for the fans, for everyone.”
Maresca confident City will win appeal
11:06 , Mike JonesPerhaps the most striking conclusion from Enzo Maresca’s press conference is how confident he seemed that Manchester City will when their appeal.
He claimed he would speak more on the case ‘when’ not if the appeal is won.
A confident performance from Enzo Maresca
11:00 , Richard Jolly in ManchesterA confident performance from a smiling Enzo Maresca, who is still sticking to the party line that he trusts and backs the club and who didn't want to go into the possibilities of what might happen if Manchester City's appeal fails.
“In its own way, it was remarkable Maresca claimed he would have still joined City if he had know they would be found guilty and that he didn't discuss the charges in his job interview.
“But he dealt with the questions well, even if really should have been Ferran Soriano or Khaldoon Al-Mubarak who addressed such issues.”
Enzo Maresca's press conferences
10:59 , Mike JonesAnd that’s all from the Manchester City boss.
There were a few nuggets from him as he answered plenty of questions about the Man City verdict.
He answered confidently and kept his composure as was expected. City believe they will win the appeal and Maresca believes them.
Did Maresca talk about the charges before taking the Man City job?
10:56 , Mike Jones“No, we didn’t speak about that.
“I think because that was not a problem for the club at that time and also because they were thinking in an honest way.
“I think they are convinced in the end we are going to win the appeal.”
The players will stick together
10:53 , Mike Jones“In this moment it is a matter of be together, stick together as Erling said yesterday. It’s true.
“This is the situation, this is the noise. The most important thing is that we continue to do the right things and are on the same page.
“We need the passion from our fans and hopefully we can get a good win.”
He added: “The players are relaxed, they are just thinking about how to beat Liverpool.”
What is the focus for the Liverpool match?
10:50 , Mike Jones“It will be a tough game for sure, a tough test. We need to be ready,” Maresca said.
“The focus has to be on the game but we know the environment at Andfield is nasty, probably even worse due to the situation.
“We will do our best to win the game.”
Is Maresca worried about the players' mentality?
10:48 , Mike Jones“I not worried at all,” he explained.
“In this moment we are top of the league so the players have all the reason to be happy and excited.”
What if Man City lose their appeal?
10:47 , Mike Jones“What happens if we win?” Maresca responded to that question.
“We are predicting the future, I’m worried about tomorrow and the game in two-three days. I don’t know what wee happen in the future.
“The only thing I can say is that I think it’s fair to respect the process. There is an appeal ongoing, we’ll see what happens.”
He added: “I won the Championship with Leicester so in the case of League One we’ll see. We are thinking of something we don’t know.”
Maresca and players focused on winning
10:44 , Mike Jones“You can not avoid it. We understand the situation, the players understand it.
“It’s our duty, the manager and the players are focused to win games. Not something different.”
Will Maresca remain at the club if City lose their appeal?
10:43 , Mike Jones“I would like to speak about this situation when we’re going to win the appeal.
“Now is no sense to speak about anything because I don’t have any information.
“I completely trust this club in this moment, in the future, always.”
Has Maresca been in touch with Pep Guardiola?
10:41 , Mike Jones“I spoke with Pep after the derby. I know that he’s coming on Tuesday.
“It’s always a pleasure, after 10 years here he can come whenever he wants. Not just to games but to training sessions.”
Is Maresca concerned about safety at Anfield following the guilty verdict
10:40 , Mike JonesHe says: “I’m always concerned, not just about Liverpool, I would be concerned about Ipswich.
“I know Anfield is a nice pitch... but the reason why I wanted to be manager is for this type of game.”
Is there a conspiracy against Man City by the Premier League?
10:38 , Mike JonesThat is a stance that certain higher ups in Manchester City hold and Enzo Maresca is asked if he also believes that the Premier League are conspiring against his club.
“I understand the reason why most of you are here. The only thing I can say is what I said already.
“The reason why I joined this club is because I completely trust, 100%, the owner, the sporting director and the organisation. I don’t have any doubts about that.
“I spoke with the club for sure and we all trust. Probably the right moment to speak about that is when we win the appeal.”
How does Maresca feel for the current players?
10:35 , Mike Jones“Again, I said already for me and the players. We can control the pitch side, the football side.
“We are focused on that and this is what we can do and we can control. We cannot control something different.”
Have Man City's titles been tainted?
10:34 , Mike JonesMaresca is asked if the achievements he had as an assistant to Pep Guardiola look different in light of the verdict.
“Absolutely not,” responds.
“The last time I was here was the treble season, I know the effort from the players, from the club, from the manager that was Pep. I know exactly the effort that the club put in to achieve that kind of target. I don’t have any doubt about that.”
Are the titles tainted?
“Absolutely not.”
Enzo Maresca press conference
10:29 , Mike JonesDan Roan of the BBC asks the first question to Enzo Maresca and it is of course about the charges and verdict.
Maresca replies: “The only thing I can say is something I already said. There is a process ongoing and in this moment I completely trust the club. That’s what I can say about that.
“I trust the club because I trust the people. This is why I came to the club. There is not another club in the world I would like to be, I’m very happy to be here. I’ve said so many times since I came here.”
Let's hear from Maresca
10:28 , Mike JonesOkay then, it’s almost time for Manchester City’s boss Enzo Maresca to chat with the media.
I’m not expecting any eye-raising revelations from the manager but it’ll be interesting to see how he handles the questions about the charges.
He’s due to come and speak in the next few minutes.
Liverpool and Manchester City drove each other to new heights – their Premier League rivalry does not need rewriting
10:24 , Mike JonesRegardless of the Premier League’s verdict on Man City’s charges, Richard Jolly argues there is limited need to question what each club achieved under Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola
Why Liverpool and Man City’s defining Premier League rivalry does not need rewriting
A final word from Haaland
10:18 , Mike JonesErling Haaland ended his interview with a final word on the upcoming match against Liverpool which he described as ‘special’.
“It’s always special to play against Liverpool. I won there, drew there and lost,” Haaland said.
“It’s always special. Every Premier League game is different and every Premier League game against Liverpool is special.”
Haaland 'feels for the fans'
10:12 , Mike JonesA bit more from Erling Haaland now who spoke yesterday as Man City’s players reported back for training after the international break.
“I care a lot about this place, the UK generally,” Haaland said. “My mother as well [as my father], they lived here for 10 years, in Nottingham and Leeds.
“They never lived in Manchester, but obviously my father trained over at Carrington [City’s former training ground] every day. I spent my first four years here, my brother nine and my sister six, so it’s a special place for us.
“I care a lot about City, I have to say. I care a lot about the fans because I’m a fan myself – I feel with them as well.”
Haaland sends message to Man City fans
10:06 , Mike JonesUnderstandably this is a difficult time for both Man City’s fans and their players.
Erling Haaland is trying to focus on the things he can affect on the pitch and has sent a message to the fans to do the same.
“I think they [the City fans travelling to Anfield] are going to have a good time,” Haaland said, in an interview with Sky Sports.
“We have to stick together. We have to stay with each other, and we have to stay positive. No matter what happens in life, we always have to have a smile.
“We have to stay positive, look ahead and try to win football games and try to enjoy the situation and win the game.
“We have to stick together, and we have to spread the love to each other. So yeah, stick together, enjoy the ride and smile.”
The unanswerable questions left by Manchester City’s distortion of English football
10:00 , Mike JonesRegardless of the outcome of the club’s appeal, Miguel Delaneywrites, an entire era of the Premier League now feels tainted.
The unanswerable questions left by Manchester City’s distortion of English football
Everton owners looking to sell club
09:54 , Mike JonesOutside of Manchester City, the news broke this morning that Everton’s owners, The Friedkin Group, are looking to sell the club.
The group secured Farhad Moshiri’s 94.1 per cent stake in December 2024, successfully overseeing the club’s transition from Goodison Park to the new Hill Dickinson Stadium ahead of the 2025-26 season.
In an official statement, the owners emphasised that they will only consider offers from prospective buyers who demonstrate the ability to be suitable stewards to build on the established momentum.
Jose Mourinho jokes he may be dead before 'final verdict' in Man City case
09:48 , Mike JonesReal Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has joked that he may not survive to see the end of Manchester City’s legal battle with the Premier League, after the club appealed a ruling finding them guilty of serious financial rule breaches.
"I would rather laugh about it," Mourinho said when asked about the case during an interview with Italy's Corriere dello Sport.
"I think we will eventually get an ending, but we are both in our 60s and we'll need to be lucky enough to still be around when the final verdict arrives.
"There will be a verdict, then appeals, then more appeals."
Man City top Premier League table
09:42 , Mike JonesToday’s press conferences will be dominated by the fallout to the news of Man City breaching Premier League financial rules.
But, we should take a look at the current state of the league table as the games will keep on rolling.
Enzo Maresca’s City currently sit top of the tree with five wins from their opening five games and that situation will be galling for some of the teams who feel aggrieved by City.
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are in second and face a tough test against Brighton tomorrow.
The other huge match of the weekend sees struggling sides Man Utd and Tottenham face off in a match which could have ramifications for both managers should the result go against them.
Reaction from Vincent Kompany
09:36 , Mike JonesVincent Kompany was Manchester City captain between 2011 and 2019 which covers the majority of the period in which City were found guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules.
Now, as Bayern Munich manager, Kompany was asked for his thoughts on the City case.
"I'll try and keep the same translation as what I said in German,” he said.
"I played 11 years for the club and I've loved all the years I've played for the club. Everything we've achieved and done on the pitch I'm really proud of.
"Everything else, as a player you're not a part of that. And right now as a coach of Bayern Munich I'm not too occupied with that topic as much as preparing for the game next week and the game we have to win tomorrow and everything I have as a coach."
The major problems with the Man City appeal and the ‘magic bullet’ they need
09:30 , Mike JonesMan City have decided to appeal against the guilty verdict in their Premier League financial breaches case but Miguel Delaneyexplains why they face an uphill struggle and provides a timeline of what comes next.
The major problems with the Man City appeal and the ‘magic bullet’ they need
What are the next steps?
09:24 , Mike JonesManchester City’s potential punishment for breaking the rules is, as of yet, unknown.
They face a potentially massive deduction in points or possibly an expulsion from the league itself.
The club have appealled against the verdict and their appeal is being assessed. The result of that appeal is likely to be revealed in December before the next stage of the case will take place.
What is going on with Man City?
09:18 , Mike JonesIn case you missed it, Manchester City have been found guilty of a majority of the charges laid against them by the Premier League of breaching financial rules.
What that means and how the independent commission came to their verdict of guilty is explained right here by our Chief Football Writer Miguel Delaney:
Maresca on the feelings of the Man City players
09:12 , Mike JonesAs part of the same interview with Man City’s internal media, Maresca was asked how the players are feeling.
He gave a positive update and claimed that the players are focused on the next few matches rather than any off-field events.
“The feeling is fantastic, to be honest,” Maresca said.
“The players are excited for the next two games. But especially they are excited because in this moment we are top of the league. The players are just focused on that.
“They know what we can control is the football side – they are not worried at all about different things.
"They know their profession and they know that the noise is there, but they don’t care too much about the noise. They are just focused in this moment on how we can bear Liverpool and how, together with the fans, we can try to win in Anfield.”
What has Enzo Maresca already said?
09:06 , Mike JonesThe Man City manager had already given an insight into his thoughts and has spoken to the club’s internal media.
