Man City v PSG LIVE: Wild six-goal thriller in Champions League enthralls returning Pep Guardiola

Paris Saint-Germain produced a statement first-half display before Manchester City threatened a remarkable comeback in a thrilling second-half performance as the Champions League holders ran out 4-2 winners at the Etihad.

City were initially blown away in front of the returning former City boss Pep Guardiola as Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha struck for the visitors and Achraf Hakimi hit the post in a rampant 17-minute spell, with PSG becoming the first team to score three first-half goals against City away from home since Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in November 2015.

Enzo Maresca made a triple change at the break and it sparked an improved showing from City, who pulled one back when Erling Haaland headed in and had several chances to score another. City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was then unable to keep out a shot from Maghnes Akliouche as PSG scored a fourth, but Haaland pulled another back for City shortly after he had hit the bar.

Haaland was denied a hat-trick as PSG goalkeeper Matveii Safonov produced a point-blank save and there was still time for former City forward Ferran Torres to roll a tame penalty straight at Donnarumma after Spain’s World Cup winner had been handed the chance to make it five for the European champions.

City were playing their first match at home since they were found guilty of almost all of the club’s breaches of the Premier League financial rules. With City appealing the decision and continuing to maintain their innocence, Maresca’s side were supported by former manager Guardiola, who returned to the Etihad for the first time since his departure in May and looked typically on edge in the stands as he enjoyed a six-goal thriller.

Enzo Maresca talks to TNT Sports

Did City deserve more from that encounter? Maresca says: “I think so. Even at 3-0 down and the amount of chances we created, we deserved something more.

“Luis Enrique was honest at the end of the game, saying ‘we were quite lucky today’.”

Enzo Maresca talks to TNT Sports

Despite that defeat Enzo Maresca has a smile on his face as he debriefs with TNT Sports.

“We started well but conceded the two quick goals and that created bad feelings. Second half we were much better and deserved something more.

“Was strange as until the first goal we played good, we were in the game. It was very difficult and then when you concede two goals in two minutes it becomes even worse. We adjusted something at half-time and didn’t lose the balance. We adjusted the way we pressed and what we did on the ball.”

Next up in the Champions League

22:45 , Flo Clifford

City are at home to AEK Athens - no offence, but probably slightly easier opposition - next matchday, Tuesday 20 October.

PSG meanwhile have another absolute blockbuster on their hands, at home to Barcelona.

Before that, City host Ipswich in the Premier League this Saturday, while PSG are away to Strasbourg in Ligue 1.

How the table looks

22:37 , Flo Clifford

PSG top the Champions League table so far, with six points from two games played and a hefty goal difference of seven.

City are down in 17th, on three points.

PSG's Desire Doue tells TNT Sports:

22:30 , Flo Clifford

“It was amazing today. The atmosphere here is amazing too. When you're a footballer, you want to play this type of game. I think we did good today. The second half wasn't as good but we are really happy.

“When you’re winning 3-0 at half-time, you can think you can relax but this is the highest level. The Champions League is amazing and City is a very good team. They have some of the best players in the world, like Haaland. We have to be better defensively.”

Four minutes are added on.

PENALTY SAVED! Man City 2-4 PSG

21:51 , Flo Clifford

‘89: Nunes does bring him down, sliding in, but he can’t believe it, and you’ve certainly seen more concrete penalties not given. But it stands.

Ex-City man Ferran Torres is resoundingly booed as he steps up to take it... it’s a poor attempt and Donnarumma saves it!!

PENALTY! Man City 2-4 PSG

21:50 , Flo Clifford

The City players swarm around the referee. VAR is looking at it...

OVER THE BAR! Man City 2-4 PSG

City have a corner. Safonov punches clear.

Man City 2-4 PSG

21:46 , Flo Clifford

‘85: More changes for PSG: Beraldo and Hernandez are on for Zaire-Emery and Fabian Ruis.

Anderson floats a cross in towards Haaland at the back post but Safonov hops out to catch.

21:44 , Flo Clifford

‘83: Fernandez crosses in, Haaland is in the box, but Marquinhos goes for an acrobatic clearance, well aware of the Norwegian’s presence.

Down the other end, Semenyo is trying to create something, but his pass has too much fizz on it for Fernandez.

WIDE! Man City 2-4 PSG

21:39 , Flo Clifford

‘78: A rare foray down the other end and Kvaratskhelia sends an effort tumbling harmlessly wide.

PSG changes: Akliouche and Dembele are replaced by Joao Neves Ferran Torres, formerly of City.

Man City 2-4 PSG

21:38 , Flo Clifford

‘77: Safonov dived for that but was never getting there. Lovely finish by Haaland.

PSG prepare to make some changes. Now Ndiaye and Fernandez sprint clear of Marquinhos but the PSG man gets back in time to hook clear. Now Haaland is in space... PSG hack it clear. Absolutely exhausting to watch.

GOAL! Man City 2-4 PSG

21:36 , Flo Clifford

‘75: Gvardiol whips in a ball to Haaland, rushing at the far post - but his header flies onto the roof of the net!

The referee meanwhile has been brought down by Fernandez!

Now Ndiaye lets fly - Safonov palms it away! This game is relentless.

Now, finally, Haaland gets another one back!

CLOSE! Man City 1-4 PSG

21:33 , Flo Clifford

‘72: Anderson beats Zaire-Emery and takes a shot, but it takes a deflection off Pacho... Fernandez takes the corner, it comes to Semenyo, but Pacho is there again with the block!

Guardiola looks deep in thought as he mutters something to Hugo Viana in the City box.

CLOSE! Man City 1-4 PSG

21:32 , Flo Clifford

‘71: Fernandez blasts in a thunderbolt - but off the woodwork. Safonov looked to have that covered, just.

OVER THE BAR! Man City 1-4 PSG

21:29 , Flo Clifford

‘68: Way over the bar by Haaland. Maresca is furious.

Man City 1-4 PSG

A very odd goal. Quite a cruel one for Donnarumma, who seemed to have made a very good save until the ball spun in.

Man City 1-4 PSG

21:27 , Flo Clifford

‘67:Semenyo flies down the right, cuts inside Marquinhos; Haaland is waving his arm frantically to receive it but Semenyo goes for goal himself and lashes the side-netting.

Doue is coming off, Kvaratskhelia on, in a first change for PSG.

Man City 1-4 PSG

21:25 , Flo Clifford

‘64: Haaland wants to make amends quickly but can’t get enough curl on his shot. That’s taken the wind out of City’s sails a little.

GOAL! Man City 1-4 PSG

21:24 , Flo Clifford

‘62: Semenyo gets a yellow for a late slide on Pacho.

Wow - against the run of play, PSG have another! Akliouche takes a touch, spins and forces what looks like a remarkable save from Donnarumma, but the force on it means it bounces backwards and the keeper, attempting to hook it out, can’t keep it out of his net.

Man City 1-3 PSG

21:21 , Flo Clifford

‘60: Ndiaye has his head in his hands as he makes contact with a lovely cross but to no avail.

Man City 1-3 PSG

21:20 , Flo Clifford

‘59: Fernandez whips in a free-kick. Khusanov and Guehi are both there but it runs wide before either can make contact.

Man City 1-3 PSG

21:18 , Flo Clifford

‘57: Ndiaye has single-handedly revived City and the volume in the Etihad has rocketed. He flies down the left and has Marquinhos beat but a close-range attempt is hastily parried by Safonov and the danger eventually cleared.

Erling Haaland pulls one back for Man City (AP)

OFF THE POST! Man City 1-3 PSG

21:16 , Flo Clifford

‘55: PSG looked absolutely imperious in the first half but City are running rampant here - although not with as many goals to show for it as they should have. Semenyo wastes a glorious chance, then with the next attack clatters the woodwork, before Haaland makes a hash of the rebound.

The offside flag goes up anyway.

Man City 1-3 PSG

21:15 , Richard Jolly at the Etihad

Maresca's triple change has had an impact, Ndiaye in particular. The Italian has got most of his subs right in his time at City.

GOAL! Man City 1-3 PSG

21:14 , Flo Clifford

‘53: Oh my word, a cross finds Ndiaye; he gets in a bit of a tangle but eventually knocks it down but his point-blank attempt is straight at Safonov!

But that wave of pressure pays off now as Ndiaye crosses in, and Haaland flicks a glancing header into the back of the net! Safonov gets a hand to it but can’t do anything about it.

Man City 0-3 PSG

21:13 , Richard Jolly at the Etihad

Pep Guardiola isn't the only manager in the crowd tonight. Think we spotted Burton Albion's Gary Bowyer, whose father, Ian, used to play for City and who won the European Cup with Nottingham Forest.

Man City 0-3 PSG

21:11 , Flo Clifford

‘50: Brilliant delivery by Semenyo; it’s a great cross to Fernandez at the back post but the Argentine’s header glances well wide. Whatever Maresca said at half-time seems to be working.

Man City 0-3 PSG

21:09 , Flo Clifford

‘48: Ooh, better from City as Haaland gets into space; closed down he pulls it back, there’s no one there immediately and Semenyo has a pop but it’s way off target!

Fernandez’s delivery from the resulting corner is deep; Gvardiol heads it from the far post but it’s straight into Safonov’s arms.

SECOND HALF: Man City 0-3 PSG

21:08 , Flo Clifford

‘46: More of the same? Maybe not... Ndiaye is one of three changes for City and he’s already darted down the left and got a shot off.

Matheus Nunes and Bouaddi are the other two on; Ruben Dias, Cherki and Doku are off.

HALF-TIME: Man City 0-3 PSG

20:51 , Richard Jolly at the Etihad

That was emphatic by PSG. A first half of brilliant dominance. City won 3-0 against Liverpool. Three days later, they are losing by the same scoreline.

 (AP)

Man City 0-3 PSG

20:50 , Flo Clifford

‘45+2: Two minutes added onto this half. Semenyo drives forward but Marquinhos blocks his attempt and hacks clear.

Doku has it now though, cuts inside and lets fly a low strike... Safonov dives to save!

Man City 0-3 PSG

20:48 , Flo Clifford

‘44: Nervy times for City as Guehi’s attempted clearance instead heads straight back to Donnarumma, who deals with it.

Man City 0-3 PSG

20:45 , Flo Clifford

‘42: Much better from City as a set-piece finds Gvardiol in a crowded box, but his header is wide! Maresca and Guardiola both go ‘oooh’.

Man City 0-3 PSG

20:43 , Flo Clifford

‘40: Hakimi shoots but it’s straight at Donnarumma.

Ooh, Semenyo gets away from Nuno Mendes, sits his man down, and lays it off into the centre of the box, and Marquinhos gets a last-ditch clearance! It goes behind for a corner... which goes behind a PSG defender for another one.

City keep it alive repeatedly but it’s eventually hooked clear.

Man City 0-3 PSG

‘37: This hasn’t been the welcome home Pep Guardiola was after, that’s for sure.

Nearly a fourth, but Hakimi’s low attempt fizzes wide.

Man City 0-3 PSG

20:39 , Richard Jolly at the Etihad

A wonderful goal by Vitinha who likes this part of the world. During his time at Wolves, he scored in the FA Cup at Chorley.

Now the PSG fans are doing the Poznan.

Man City 0-3 PSG

20:38 , Flo Clifford

‘34: While PSG celebrated their third, City had a quick huddle. Crisis meeting. What do they do?

This is the first time City have ever conceded three goals at home in a Champions League tie.

Fernandez goes down in the box and wants a penalty, but he brought himself down clawing at a PSG defender, and the referee says no dice.

 (AP)

GOAL! Man City 0-3 PSG

20:36 , Flo Clifford

‘32: It should be 3-0! Khusanov again is caught napping and Hakimi’s header clatters off the woodwork - but no matter, seconds later Vitinha finally gets his goal!

It’s another great team goal, PSG work down the right, Zaire-Emery flicks a cheeky backheel to Vitinha, who blasts a right-footed strike into the back of the net. Luis Enrique jumps for joy.

Man City 0-2 PSG

20:33 , Flo Clifford

‘30: Vitinha has another shot and Donnarumma parries it, but recovers. The ‘oles’ are ringing out from the away support.

Man City 0-2 PSG

20:28 , Flo Clifford

‘25: Akliouche and Marquinhos double up on Doku down the left. Now Dembele takes a rather chunky touch and Semenyo is onto it, but his half-cross-half-strike is heavy and wide.

Doku is back down the left and crosses for Haaland, unmarked at the far post, but the Norwegian’s header is dreadful, high and wide.

Man City 0-2 PSG

In the last two years, PSG have only come 15th and 11th in the league phase. A devastating start tonight suggests they are taking it more seriously now and are keen to avoid the round of 24

Man City 0-2 PSG

‘21: Ruis, who has been excellent so far, threads a pass through to Dembele but Guehi makes a good interception and kills the pace on it.

Man City 0-2 PSG

20:22 , Flo Clifford

‘19: Cherki looks lively but is dispossessed on the edge of the box by Zaire-Emery.

PSG have had four attempts on goal, four on target. City have one and nil so far.

Haaland goes solo but Pacho makes a vital challenge.

Man City 0-2 PSG

20:20 , Flo Clifford

‘17: One minute and 39 seconds between those two goals. Gvardiol now does well to hold off Hakimi as they hunt a third in quick succession.

Vitinha is in space now but his attempt takes a deflection off Dias’ shin and Donnarumma saves.

 (Reuters)

GOAL! Man City 0-2 PSG

20:19 , Flo Clifford

‘15: From bad to worse! Again PSG drive down the right; Dembele crosses to Doue before driving forward, Doue curling a beautiful cross back to him at the far post, and the Ballon d’Or winner thumps the header home.

Should Donnarumma have saved that? It doesn't look good when he is beaten at the near post from 20 yards...

GOAL! Man City 0-1 PSG

‘13: How much will Semenyo regret that?! PSG float away on the counter, dragging City onto the right before laying it off to Doue on the left; he cuts inside and a lovely low strike has a diving Donnarumma beaten, right into the bottom corner.

CLOSE! Man City 0-0 PSG

20:15 , Flo Clifford

‘12: Very close for City! Safonov punches Fernandez’s delivery onto the crossbar and it just about falls ahead of the goal-line; Semenyo gets onto the rebound but blasts over the bar! A lucky escape for PSG...

Man City 0-0 PSG

20:14 , Flo Clifford

‘12: Replays show Marquinhos got a tiny nick of the ball as well as his man.

City do have a free-kick however from another foul, and Safonov makes a save at his near post - but it hits the woodwork and goes behind for a City corner.

Man City 0-0 PSG

20:13 , Flo Clifford

‘10: Semenyo plays a sloppy ball and Ruiz leaps onto it, PSG pressing forward... it’s cut out but Ruiz is quick to nab it off Anderson once again and it’s worked to Zaire-Emery, who forces a comfortable save from Donnarumma with a low effort through the legs of a defender.

Down the other end Cherki goes down under a Marquinhos challenge... referee Sven Jablonski tells them to jog on, to the derision of the crowd, but VAR is looking at this...

No penalty!

Man City 0-0 PSG

Man City 0-0 PSG

20:09 , Flo Clifford

‘5: A couple of nervy moments from City so far, particularly from Donnarumma, facing his old club tonight. PSG are looking to chase him down at any opportunity as he plays out from the back, and have come close to nicking it a couple of times.

Man City 0-0 PSG

20:06 , Flo Clifford

‘2: The smoke from the pyrotechnics is still clearing. PSG boot the ball away immediately on kick-off, to no obvious advantage. Doku has an early sight of it - PSG will certainly need to contain him.

Cherki is wrong-footed by Dembele, who releases Doue, but he’s crowded out at the byline. Now Donnarumma plays a rather short ball and is lucky Guehi is alive to it!

Manchester City fans waved hundreds of inflatable bananas in the air as they faced down Liverpool supporters at Anfield last week, and some fans have come similarly armed for tonight’s game.

City fans had applauded their players before kick-off and waved giant bananas, rekindling a tradition from the late 1980s when fans brought bananas and other inflatables to matches during a difficult time in English football when clubs were banned from European competition.

The idea was promoted by supporters’ group 1894, and is a reference to the fans bringing fun to the game amid conflict with football’s authorities. “The message – this fan base has always been on a rollercoaster,” the group tweeted last week.

Anyway, Pep Guardiola is here to watch them on his first return to the Etihad since he stood down in the summer.

Burnham told to ‘come clean’ as deleted records show he had two dinners with Man City chairman

19:10 , Athena Stavrou, Political Reporter

Andy Burnham has been told to “come clean” after deleted records reportedly show he had two hospitality dinners with Manchester City’s chairman when he was mayor of the city.

The prime minister is facing questions over his ties to the scandal-hit club during his time as Greater Manchester mayor, and has told MPs that “all of my dealings” with its Abu Dhabi owners would be published.

On Monday, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) revealed Mr Burnham had a formal meeting with Manchester City’s chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak at an investment summit, chatted to him in the stands at a star player’s testimonial game and was accompanied by staff from the club on official overseas visits.

But it has since emerged that Mr Burnham also dined with Mr Al Mubarak at matches in 2017 and 2018, with the register of declarations in which the dinners were included reportedly deleted from the GMCA website.

Luis Enrique hopes Manchester City ‘can avoid the sanction’ for breaching financial rules

19:02 , Richard Jolly, Senior Football Correspondent

Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has said he wishes Manchester City all the best after they were found guilty of 114 Premier League charges of breaching financial rules.

And the triple Champions League-winning manager said City deserved all the silverware they have secured in a controversial period in their history.

City, who are appealing against the verdict an independent commission reached, face potential punishments including expulsion from the Premier League or relegation, if they get a large points penalty.

But Luis Enrique defended them and praised them as an incredible team in recent years. City, who won the Champions League in 2023, were ruled to have benefited from more than £900m in disguised funding in a nine-year period between 2009 and 2018.

“There is a lot of noise around Manchester City and there is often noise around big clubs. We have just have to wait and see what the final decision will be.

“I hope everything works out well for Manchester City because I think what they have done on the pitch has been incredible over the last few years and they certainly deserved to win on the pitch all the trophies they have won. Now we have to wait to see what the authorities decide or the judge is going to say.”

Enzo Maresca hits back at critics of Man City’s celebrations after Liverpool win: ‘Criticised for what?’

18:43 , Richard Jolly

Enzo Maresca has defended his Manchester City players after they were accused of over-celebrating victory against Liverpool when they had been found guilty of 114 charges of breaching Premier League financial rules by saying they did nothing wrong.

City won their first match since an independent commission ruled they had benefited from more than £900m in disguised funding and after a verdict said they had sham sponsorship contracts.

Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki scored second-half goals at Anfield on Sunday and, while pundits and opposition supporters found fault with City for their wild celebrations on the pitch and in the dressing room, Maresca and captain Ruben Dias believed they have nothing to say sorry for.

“Criticised for what? We won 0-3 Anfield. What do you want us to do?” asked the Italian. “And even if it was 0-1, it was exactly the same. We work every day to win games. It's the only thing, again, that we can think, we can be focused.

“The rest is just things from outside that we need to deal with. But we were so, so, so happy inside the pitch, and you cannot imagine inside the changing room.”

Man City confirm Pep Guardiola plan ahead of return

18:32 , Jamie Braidwood

Manchester City have confirmed that they will display a “mosaic display in the Pep Guardiola stand” prior to kick-off against Paris Saint-Germain.

Guardiola, who is now a global ambassador for the City Football Group, was not personally accused or charged by the Premier League, but wrote on Instagram last week: “I want every single Manchester City fan across the world to know I am here; more than ever. I am, always have been, always will, be behind my club, my owner, my chairman, [CEO] Ferran [Soriano], the players, staff, [manager] Enzo [Maresca] and you, our unique supporters. Let me be clear: we will get through this together. I love you all.”

Pep Guardiola will return to Manchester City to watch next week’s game against Paris Saint-Germain in another sign he is continuing to stand by his former club after they were found guilty of 114 charges levelled by the Premier League.

The Catalan, who posted a message on Instagram in support of the club’s owners and executives, had long insisted they were innocent of the charges of breaching the Premier League’s financial rules.

Guardiola stood down in the summer, before an independent commission concluded City used “sham” contracts to boost their revenue by over £900m over a nine-year period.

City, who have continued to maintain they have “irrefutable” proof they are not guilty, are appealing against the verdict, but potential punishments include expulsion from the Premier League or a points penalty that could make relegation inevitable or likely.

Hello and welcome

In a normal season, Manchester City v Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League is the sort of game that is expected to grace the knockout stages. An early meeting is the league phase would be considered a treat, as well.

But this is not a normal season and so tonight the focus is once again everything around the game, which is City’s first at the Etihad since they were found guilty of almost all of the Premier League charges for breaking financial rules.

Pep Guardiola is going to be at the Etihad for the first time since leaving the club in May in a symbolic showing of support, and there will be a special presentation for the former manager following his 10 years of dominance at City.
