Man claims trial to taking syabu for fifth time

Kota Kinabalu: A 31-year-old unemployed man was charged with repeatedly taking syabu.

Basrie Amil was brought before Sessions Court Judge Hurman Hussain to face the charge against him, Friday.

Basrie, who claimed trial to the charge, is accused of taking the drug at 2.40am on June 30 after his urine tested positive for the drug at the police station here.

The charge stated that he has four previous convictions for taking the drug on July 13, 2020, Aug 26, 2022, Feb 12, 2025 and Dec 10, 2025.

The offence under Section 39C(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act and read together with Section 39B(1) of the same Act carries a jail term of between five and seven years, and whipping, on conviction.

The court set Aug 8 this year for mention of the case and no bail was offered to Basrie.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Bryan Francis appeared for the prosecution while Basrie was not represented.

Meanwhile, a total of 25 Philippines nationals were each sentenced to four months’ jail after pleading guilty to entering the State without valid passes or permits.

All the accused, comprising 13 men and 12 women, had entered the State without valid documents and were arrested at locations around Kota Kinabalu and Keningau.

Prosecuting Officers Baxter Junior Goh and Norhayati Abd Hari prosecuted.
