TAWAU: A 19-year-old local died after he was swept away by a sudden strong current while swimming at Tagal Kampung Kijang, Merotai Besar, here, on Monday.
Acting Tawau District Police Chief Supt Wilynton Enchana Watt said police had classified the case as sudden death (SDR) for the time being.
He said preliminary investigations found that the victim and 12 friends had gone to the river early that morning to swim.
The victim and six others entered the water while the rest stayed nearby to prepare food.
“At about 9.30am, the river current suddenly became strong, prompting the six youths to try to save themselves.
“All six managed to reach the riverbank, but the victim failed to follow them and was seen sinking,” he said.
Wilynton said the victim’s friends then sought help from the tagal caretaker, who dived into the river and found him pale and unconscious.
The victim was taken to the Merotai Besar Health Clinic, where he was pronounced dead after being examined and treated by the attending doctor.
His body was later taken to the Tawau Hospital Forensic Unit for a post-mortem examination. A physical examination found no signs of foul play or suspicious injuries.
Wilynton said although the case had been classified as SDR, police would continue their investigations to complete the necessary documentation and procedures for further action.
He urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to contact Investigating Officer SM Fredolen Biin at 019-813 6953 or the nearest police station.
He also advised the public to prioritise safety during recreational activities near rivers and avoid taking risks if water conditions change or currents suddenly become strong.
