
LAHAD DATU: A man died while receiving treatment after he was believed to have been electrocuted during a fire incident involving a recycling factory in Batu 2 Kampung Durian, here, on Saturday.
District Fire and Rescue station chief, Sumsoa Rashid said his department received a distress call following the fire at 5.09pm via NG999.
A total of 27 firefighters were deployed to the scene in two machineries, a water tanker, a Four Wheel Drive (4WD), EMRS vehicle and personal vehicle.
“Upon arrival, the commander of the operation reported that a recycling factory measuring 90X100 feet was ablaze.
“We carried out the operation to extinguish the fire using three hose lines, comprising a 200ft hose line with two nozzles from the Fire Rescue Tender (FRT), a 200ft hose line with two nozzles with a portable pump drawing water from an open water source, and a 200ft hose line with two nozzles connected to the water tanker,” he said, adding that water for the operation was sourced from a nearby fire hydrant and an open water source.
According to Sumsoa, the operation also using a backhoe belong to the premise. The team also managed to save a quarters, a storage and a compressor machine from being destroyed by the fire.
He said a man was reported to have suffered an electric shock during the incident and the victim received initial treatment at the scene from the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM) medical team before sent to the hospital for further treatment.
However, the victim was later pronounced dead by the KKM.
Sumsoa said the fire was put under control at 7.38pm and firefighters remain at the scene conducting damping-down operations and overhaul work to eliminate any remaining hotspots and ensure there is no risk of the fire reigniting.
He added that the operation ended at 11.50am on Sunday after the team made sure there was no other danger at the scene.
Meanwhile, earlier the Lahad Datu Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Lahad Datu) also received a distress call at 11.58am following a fire involving a 10-tonne lorry at Ladang Mansumi Borneo, 33km away from the station.
A team of nine firefighters was deployed to the scene in a fire engine and EMRS vehicle. The team carried out operation to extinguish the fire using a stream and put the fire under control at 12.19pm.
The operation ended at 12.21pm after the team made sure there was no other danger at the scene.
