A man was found dead under mysterious circumstances at Mohalla Deep Nagar, Mullanpur Dakha, and drug overdose was suspected to be the cause behind the death. However, the family did not inform the police about the death and even cremated the body.
The deceased was identified as Gurcharan Singh (32). He was survived by two children, aged six and eight. The incident is a double blow for the family, as Gurcharan’s wife had also passed away about seven months ago.
The deceased’s father, Bhupendra Singh, said Gurcharan had gone to work as a daily wage labourer at night and returned home around 5:30 am. After coming, he went to the washroom. Later, when family members woke up, Gurcharan was found dead in the washroom. A syringe was also found near him, raising suspicion of a drug overdose.
Family members alleged that chitta, a drug, was being sold openly in the area and it led to their son’s death.
DSP Dakha Karan Singh Sandhu said his family had cremated the body without informing the police. The family members claimed that the victim stayed in a de-addiction centre for a few months but after returning from there, his wife expired and he again started consuming drugs.
“Though it is a suspected drug case and the body was already cremated, forensic examination of the deceased’s mobile phone will be conducted to check if he brought any drug from any peddler. The police will not spare anyone found involved in drug peddling,” he said.
