The serene surroundings of Pengkalan Petah jetty were marred by a tragic turn of events as a 39-year-old man met his untimely demise while attempting to elude arrest during a police operation. The individual, burdened by a troubling history of six drug-related offenses, took the drastic step of plunging into the river during an operation conducted by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department around 4:30 pm.

Supt Mohamad Ismail Jamaluddin, the dedicated police chief of the Bachok district, shared the unfortunate details of the incident. The lifeless body of the man was discovered by a diligent search and rescue team at approximately 7 pm, a mere 10 meters from the spot where he had made the fateful leap into the river. Prompt identification by a relative facilitated the somber task of transporting the deceased to Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital.

Mohamad Ismail underscored the gravity of the situation by highlighting the suspect's extensive criminal record, leading the police to categorize the case as a sudden death. The unfolding tragedy didn't end with the loss of one life; it also saw the arrest of four other suspects during the police operation, codenamed Ops Tapis Khas. The apprehended individuals were promptly escorted to the Bachok district police headquarters for further legal scrutiny.

This unfortunate incident serves as a poignant reminder of the high stakes involved in attempts to evade law enforcement. The deceased man's decision to leap into the river not only resulted in the forfeiture of his life but also sheds light on the intricate challenges faced by authorities when dealing with individuals entrenched in a cycle of criminal activities.

As investigations progress, the incident prompts contemplation on the broader societal issues tied to drug-related offenses. It underscores the imperative need for comprehensive approaches that address the root causes and ramifications of such crimes within communities, emphasizing the importance of proactive measures to prevent further tragedies of this nature.
