
TAWAU: The body of a man who was feared drowned in waters off Sg Melayu, Pulau Sebatik, on Friday, was found around 7.30am on Saturday.
Tawau Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Maritime Zone Deputy Director Commander Amiludin Yenggah said the victim, identified as Abdul Rahim Kasil, 56, was found by local residents at the mouth of Sg Pukul, Pulau Sebatik.
He said the victim’s body was taken to Carilamat Forward Base (PHC) for identification.
Earlier, a search and rescue operation was activated on Friday after a boat carrying a married couple sank due to a collision with a submerged object and crashed into a mangrove area.

Read more The victim and his wife, Nurlina Aripin, 52, are believed to have fallen into the sea as a result of the collision.
However, he said, the victim’s wife was rescued by local residents and taken to Tawau Hospital to receive treatment for leg injuries.
Amiludin said that Ops Carilamat, which was coordinated by Maritime Malaysia and participated by the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), Civil Defense Force (APM), Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) and the local community, ended at 8.30am.
Meanwhile, he reminded the maritime community to always be aware of bad weather conditions when carrying out activities at sea and always use a life jacket.
