Kota Kinabalu: A 61-year-old man was fined RM2,000 or jailed 30 days for failing to come to the Immigration Department Office to assist in the investigation of illegal entry case.

Yong Yick Thong pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim, to the charge against him on Tuesday.

He failed without reasonable explanation to come as a witness and assisting in the investigation of the illegal entry case at the Immigration Department office in Ranau on May 28 this year at 10am.

The offence under Section 40(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and punishable under Section 57 of the Same Act which provides for a jail term of up to five years, or a fine of up to RM10,000, or both, on conviction.

Read more The court heard that the Immigration team had arrested eight illegal immigrants at a construction site of a homestay in Ranau.

Investigation revealed that the land of the construction site was belonged to Yong.

As the owner of the land, Yong was given a summon to be a witness and assisting in the investigation of the illegal entry case.

However, Yong failed to attend.

Prosecuting Officer Abu Sopian Karate appeared for the prosecution while Yong was represented by counsel Muhamad Amirul Amin.
