Kota Kinabalu: A 28-year-old man was fined RM15,000 for allowing three illegal immigrants to stay in a premises under his control.

Sessions Court Judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim handed the sentence to Liew Chun Chieh who pleaded guilty to the charge against him.

The court fined Liew RM5,000 or two months’ jail for each of the illegal immigrant involved.

He had permitted the three Filipinas aged 28 and 32, who did not have any documents to stay in the New Kyun Lok Restaurant in Jalan Gumbilai, Tamparuli on March 26 at 11.30am.

Read more The offence under Section 55E(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 carries a jail term of up to a year, or a fine of between RM5,000 and RM30,000, or both, for each illegal immigrant involved.

During mitigation, Liew who was not represented, asked for leniency.

However, Prosecuting Officer Azizah S Ahmad from the Immigration Department, urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence. Liew paid the fine.
