Kota Kinabalu: A 32-year-old man who posted abusive words on Facebook that insulted the Malaysia Royal Police (PDRM) was fined RM30,000 or eight months’ jail.

Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan meted out the sentence to Jasmie Jariman who pleaded guilty to the charge against him on Monday.

AdvertisementJasmie had posted the abusive words through his Facebook page – Jasmie Bang Bos at 10pm on Jan 22, 2023 at a house in Kg Pengiran, Sipitang.

The comment was made with the intention of hurting others’ feelings.

Read more The offence under Section 233(1)(a) of the Multimedia and Communication Act 1998 carries a fine of up to RM50,000 or a jail term of up to a year, or both, on conviction.

During mitigation, Jasmie who was not represented, asked for leniency.

Advertisement (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Fazriel Fardiansyah urged the court to impose a heavy sentence on the grounds that it involved public interest as Jasmie had posted the words on Facebook to insult the PDRM.

Following a police report, Jasmie was arrested and the handphone that was used to post on the social media platform was seized.
