SANDAKAN: A man was fined RM48,000 by the Sessions Court here on Thursday after pleading guilty to possessing animals from protected species.

Hendry Rayner Endim, 38, a plantation officer, entered the guilty plea before Sessions Court Judge Roslinda Razali after the charge was read to him.

According to the charge, he was found in possession of three carcasses of short-tailed pythons, one reticulated python, one carcass of a Malay civet, and two carcasses of common palm civets, all classified as protected species under the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997.

The offence was committed at about 2.10pm on May 24, 2025, along the Paitan–Kanibongan road without a valid permit under the enactment.

He was charged under Section 41(2) of the enactment and fined RM48,000, or six months’ imprisonment in default, with prosecution conducted by Wildlife Department officer Primus Lambut while the accused was unrepresented.
