A 44-year-old man who went missing while foraging for petai in Terengganu was found dead under a duku tree, with no foul play suspected.
KUALA NERUS: A 44-year-old man reported missing after going to forage for petai (stink beans) at an orchard in Bukit Kampung Gemuruh, Tepoh, on Sunday was found dead today.
Kuala Terengganu police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said the victim, Mohd Tarmizi Alias from Kampung Petaling, Tepoh, was found by villagers at 4.35pm lying on his back under a tree.
He said initial checks found the body had begun to decompose. The victim was believed to have died more than 24 hours earlier.
“The body of the victim, who was single, was found beneath a duku tree by three villagers involved in the search and rescue (SAR) operation alongside the Terengganu Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM).
“Police found no elements of foul play in the death, and the body has been handed over to the family for further action,” he said in a statement today.
JBPM operations commander Baharum Mohamad said the rescue team took over 40 minutes to bring the body down due to the steep and hilly terrain.
“In addition, the slippery ground conditions caused by heavy rain further complicated the operation. The body was brought down to the foot of the hill at about 6.15pm before being handed over to the police,” he said.
