A man was sentenced to 30 months in prison and fined RM1,500 after admitting to stealing a grass-cutting machine from the home of a former Kedah Menteri Besar. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of May 29 at a house located in Taman Rakyat.

The accused was charged under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking and theft. According to reports, he had unlawfully entered the residence and taken the grass-cutter before being apprehended. Authorities moved swiftly, and the man was soon brought before the court to face the charges.

During the proceedings, the 33-year-old pleaded guilty and requested leniency from the court. He claimed financial difficulties had driven him to commit the offence, adding that he had no stable source of income and was responsible for caring for his wife and elderly parents.

Despite his appeal, the prosecution opposed any reduction in sentence. The court was informed that this was not his first offence and that he had a prior criminal record, which showed a pattern of repeated unlawful behavior. The prosecution stressed the importance of deterrence and urged the court to impose a sentence that reflected the gravity of the crime.

After considering the circumstances and the man's criminal history, the court handed down a 30-month prison sentence along with a fine of RM1,500. Failure to pay the fine would result in an additional six months of imprisonment.

Although the stolen item may not have held high monetary value, the court emphasized the seriousness of breaking into a residence and breaching public security. The fact that the house belonged to a former head of state government added weight to the case, highlighting that the law applies equally to all offenders regardless of the target.

This case serves as a reminder that prior criminal conduct can significantly influence sentencing decisions, and that financial hardship is not always accepted as a mitigating factor when repeat offences are involved.
