A 21-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for a triple murder in a Swedish hairdressing salon, the court said on Tuesday.

The man killed two boys aged 15 and 16 as well as a 20-year-old man with a shot to the head at the establishment in Uppsala in April 2025.

"The crimes for which he has been convicted are particularly brutal and have led to the deaths of three young people," Judge Daniel Gustavsson was quoted as saying in the statement.

Life imprisonment was therefore the only option, the judge said.

Two weeks before the incident in Uppsala, a university town 70 kilometres north of Stockholm, the man had shot two other people in Eslöv in southern Sweden. He also fired at two further people outside the hairdressing salon in Uppsala.

He was therefore also convicted of attempted murder in four cases and of two counts of serious breaches of the Weapons Act. He must also pay damages of around 3.4 million Swedish kronor ($370,000) to the victims and bereaved families.

Two other young men were convicted in connection with the incident in Uppsala on charges including aiding and abetting murder and serious breaches of the Weapons Act.

Both the incident in Uppsala and the one in Eslöv are linked to organized crime, according to the court’s statement. However, a more specific motive for the offences could not be established during the proceedings.

Sweden has been grappling for several years with criminal gangs engaged in power struggles over market dominance in the drug trade.

At the end of 2025, the Swedish police reported that around 67,500 people in Sweden had links to criminal networks, including 17,500 active gang members.
