Kota Kinabalu: A man was arrested after failing to produce valid identification documents during a crime prevention operation at a mall here, said acting Kota Kinabalu police chief Supt Syed Lot Syed Ab Rahman.
He said the arrest was made at about 3pm on March 15 by a district police taskforce conducting Ops Cegah Jenayah in the area following a rise in theft cases.
Police detained the man after finding his behaviour suspicious, and subsequent checks revealed that he was unable to produce any valid identification or travel documents to remain in Malaysia.
The suspect has been detained for further action, and the case is being investigated under Section 61(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for being in Malaysia without valid travel documents.
Syed Lot said a video recording of the arrest had circulated on Facebook and added that further investigations are ongoing, including verification with the Immigration Department regarding the suspect’s citizenship status.
