A 27-year-old migrant labourer from Bihar was killed following a violent altercation over food at a grain market at Sathiala village in the Baba Bakala area on May 14. The police have booked another migrant, identified as Premkang Kumar Rai, a resident of Supaul district in Bihar, in this regard.

He was arrested on Saturday, the police said. A case under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered against him.

Tridev Kumar, the complainant, said he and other labourers had been working at the New Kisan trading company at the grain market. After finishing work at around 9.30 pm on Thursday, the labourers sat down for dinner prepared by Opinder Kumar Rai, the victim. During the meal, the accused allegedly asked for more vegetable curry. When Opinder reportedly refused to serve more food, an argument broke out between the two. The police said the accused allegedly lost his temper, picked up a wooden log and started assaulting Opinder. During the scuffle, the accused allegedly pushed the victim forcefully, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on a hard surface. The injured labourer became unconscious on the spot, and was first taken to the Civil Hospital. Doctors later referred him to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in Amritsar due to his critical condition. Opinder succumbed to his injuries during treatment at the hospital on Friday.
