Man in custody after reports of shots fired outside Chicago federal building

A man is in custody after shots were fired outside of a Chicago federal building early Tuesday morning, police said.

No one was injured and the federal building sustained only minor damage after the incident, the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement.

A security guard reported an active shooter near the Kluczynski Federal Building overnight, prompting police and federal agents to respond.

The office tower is home to a number of federal agencies including the IRS, the Social Security Administration, and the Labor Department. Illinois U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth also have offices there, and a federal courthouse is nearby.

It was not immediately known whether the suspect was targeting the government building or what his motive might have been. Bullet holes were seen in an office building across the street.

Chicago police said they recovered one firearm and that charges were pending.

They did not release any other information.
