Kota Kinabalu: A general worker was jailed seven months, Friday, for stealing a set of wireless Bluetooth earbuds.

Mohd Sapie Basir, 40, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to stealing a set of Apple AirPods worth RM700 belonging to Juliana Rani at 12.40pm on July 2 in a rented room at Warisan Square, here.

Sapie was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and liability of a fine, on conviction.

The prosecution informed the court that the complainant found her rented room was broken into and ransacked and the Airpods were among the valuables that went missing.

Sapie was arrested by police on July 5 behind the futsal court at the Jesselton Point ferry terminal, the court heard.

Duty counsel Carmen Khoo, representing Sapie, requested a lenient sentence on the grounds that it was his first offence and that he has two children.

Sapie was ordered to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest.

In another case, a man was jailed six months for committing mischief by destroying a cable at a building, here.

Mohd Fauzi Saini admitted to cutting the cooling tower cable using a wire cable cutter at the Cooling Tower division of the Umno building here at 5.20am on Oct 8, 2021.

He had committed the offence along with another accused, Azmin Ruhito, who had pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced last year.

The charge under Section 431A of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to two years or fine or both, on conviction.

The prosecution informed the court that Fauzi and his accomplice were caught red-handed while committing the offence and were handed to the police.

The court ordered Fauzie to serve the sentence from Friday.

Meanwhile, a 48-year-old man was charged with theft.

Junain Hamdani pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to stealing a book rack and a unit of loudspeaker belonging to P.M Sundar Muniandy at 9.20am on Dec 12, 2022 at a house in Taman Alamesra, Jalan Sulaman.

The charge is framed under Section 380 of the Penal Code.

The court fixed Aug 8 for pre-trial case management and released Junain on a bail of RM2,500 in two sureties.

Inspectors Kelvan Elson Maik and Navind Kumar Vijayan prosecuted.
