A 34-year-old man, Chiok Wai Loong, was sentenced to six months in jail and fined RM12,000 by a sessions court in Kuala Lumpur for an offensive Facebook post related to the “Allah”-printed socks issue. Chiok, who represented himself in court, pleaded guilty before judge Suzana Hussin.
During his plea, Chiok asked for a minimum sentence, citing the need to support his 63-year-old mother. He referred to himself as a “keyboard warrior” and admitted that he “didn’t think” his comment would hurt other people’s feelings.
Chiok was charged under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a penalty of up to one year of imprisonment, a fine of up to RM50,000, or both. Despite tearfully apologizing in court and stating that he did not intend to hurt anyone’s feelings, deputy public prosecutor Datin Kalmizah Salleh requested a deterrent sentence, emphasizing the importance of respect and courtesy in a multi-racial country.
Kalmizah mentioned that 24 police reports were lodged against Chiok. He was arrested in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, and has since deleted the offending post. However, he was confronted by a group of men who recorded his apology and posted the video on his Facebook page, showing him surrounded as he promised not to insult other religions again.
This is the second case related to offensive social media content over the “Allah”-printed socks issue, with the first being Sabahan Ricky Shane Cagampang, 33, who pleaded guilty in Kota Kinabalu and was sentenced to six months in jail and fined RM15,000.
in default of four months’ jail. The case against Chiok serves as a reminder of the consequences of posting offensive content on social media platforms. The court’s decision highlights the importance of exercising caution and respect in online interactions, especially in a diverse and multi-cultural society like Malaysia.
Chiok's case also sheds light on the impact of social media comments, even those made without malicious intent. It underscores the need for individuals to be mindful of their words and considerate of others' feelings when engaging in online discussions.
As social media continues to play a significant role in communication and expression, it is crucial for users to be aware of the legal and ethical implications of their online behavior. Respect for different beliefs and cultures should always be upheld, both online and offline, to foster harmony and understanding in society.
Additionally, Chiok's case highlights the importance of education and awareness regarding the sensitivities surrounding religious and cultural issues. It serves as a call for greater tolerance and empathy in online discourse, encouraging individuals to think before they post and consider the potential impact of their words on others.
Moving forward, it is essential for authorities to continue monitoring and addressing instances of offensive online content while also promoting responsible digital citizenship. This includes educating the public on the legal and ethical boundaries of online communication and encouraging respectful dialogue that fosters understanding and unity.
As social media platforms evolve and become more integrated into daily life, it is crucial for users to recognize the power of their words and the impact they can have on others. By promoting a culture of respect and empathy online, we can create a more inclusive and harmonious digital community.
