KOTA KINABALU: A 32-year-old man was sentenced to five years in jail for robbing his ex-girlfriend of her handbag at a rented house in Penampang earlier this year.

Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus meted out the sentence on Mohd Asroy Adonara Andfensus Darmasah, who changed his plea to guilty on Thursday, just before his trial was set to begin.

The court heard that Asroy forced his way into the woman’s home at Taman Starlan around 10.55pm on June 2, pulled her hair, pushed her to the ground, and took her handbag containing a wallet and an iPhone worth about RM4,000.

During mitigation, the unrepresented Asroy pleaded for leniency, saying he suffers from psychiatric illness and has three young children, while Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Shafeerah Mad Iskim sought a heavy sentence due to the violence and trauma caused.

The court ordered Asroy to serve his sentence from the date of his arrest, noting that the offence under Section 392 of the Penal Code carries up to 14 years’ imprisonment, a fine, or whipping.
