Kota Kinabalu: A 28-year-old man who caused grievous hurt to his colleague was jailed seven years.

Sessions Court Judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim meted out the sentence to Sandul Hajijul who pleaded guilty, Friday.

Sandul had voluntarily assaulted Hakim Qushayyi Cheah, 42, by using a screw driver at 9.15am on Aug 7 at the construction site in Kem Lok Kawi, Kinarut.

The offence under Section 326 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 20 years, and liability to a fine or whipping, on conviction.

The court ordered Sandul to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest.

During mitigation, Sandul, who was not represented, asked for leniency saying that he has a family to look after and that his children are still small.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Atiqa Nazihah Azmi urged the court to impose the maximum sentence on the grounds that it was a serious offence.

Atiqa informed the court that the victim suffered multiple wounds on his cheeks, neck and abdomen.

The court heard that the fight between Sandul and his colleague occurred at their workplace.

Sandul took the screw driver and stabbed his colleague a few times on his cheeks, neck and abdomen.

Due to the incident, the colleague suffered multiple injuries and was sent to the hospital for further treatment.

Sandul was arrested following a police report lodged.
