Man jailed for defying TB treatment order

SANDAKAN: A man in his 20s, Almahzar Madin, was jailed six months by the Magistrate’s Court here for defying a tuberculosis (TB) treatment order.

He pleaded guilty to breaching Section 22(b) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342) by disobeying a lawful directive from an authorised health officer to undergo treatment.

He was also convicted under Section 12A for failing to continue his TB treatment, which put the public at risk.

The offence carries a maximum fine of RM10,000 or up to two years’ imprisonment.

In addition to the jail term, Almahzar is required to complete his TB treatment as prescribed. Environmental Health Officer Sufri Ismail prosecuted the case while the man was unrepresented.
