Man jailed for hiding stolen laptop

Kota Kinabalu: A restaurant worker was jailed five months, Monday, for hiding a stolen laptop.

Alif Hamzi Buniran, 31, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to committing the offence at 3pm on Feb 8 at a computer shop in Alamesra, near here.

The court was told that the laptop was reported missing on Jan 29 at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport here.

Duty counsel Lim Ming Zoong, representing Alif, requested a lenient sentence from the date of his arrest as he cannot afford to pay the fine.

Read more Alif was charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both, on conviction.

In another case, two people were fined a total of RM3,600 for engaging in gambling sessions.

Unemployed None Md Rahman, 31, and hawker Aminah, 32, were fined RM1,800 or two months jail each after they separately pleaded guilty.

Unemployed None admitted to purchasing two pieces of illegal lottery at 6.45am on Jan 24 in Yu Sang area in Kepayan, while Aminah pleaded guilty to engaging in a gambling session in public at 3.15pm on Oct 2, last year, also at Yu Sang area.

According to the prosecution, a handphone, mobile printer and RM273 cash were also seized from None while RM100 cash was seized from Aminah.

Duty counsel Lim for None and Aminah requested a lower fine.

Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik, prosecuting, applied an adequate sentence.

Lovely also ordered the seized money to be forfeited as government revenue.

None was charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act carries a jail term of up to six months, or fine of up to RM3,000, or both, on conviction while Aminah was charged under Section 7(2) of the same Act which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months jail or both, on conviction.
