Man jailed three years for illegal possession of pangolin, monkey

TAWAU: A local man was sentenced to a total of 60 months’ jail by the Sessions Court here on Thursday for possessing a monkey and a pangolin without a valid permit.

Jufrie Abu, 42, received the sentence from Judge Ahmad Faizadh Yahaya after pleading guilty to both charges against him.

The court ordered the accused to serve the sentences concurrently, namely 36 months for possessing the pangolin and 24 months for possessing the monkey, meaning he will spend three years in prison.

Jufrie committed the offences at Kg Kalumpang along Jalan Tawau-Semporna at around 11pm on June 10, 2026, when a Sabah Wildlife Department team found a pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) and a Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica) in his possession without legal authorization.

Sabah Wildlife Department prosecuting officer Primus Lambut conducted the prosecution, while the accused was unrepresented by counsel.
