Kota Kinabalu: A 31-year-old man was sentenced to three years' jail by the Sessions Court here on Thursday for committing mischief by throwing burning plastic into a house compound.
Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan passed sentence on unrepresented Basrie Amil after he pleaded guilty to committing the offence against the property of a 45-year-old man in Taman Sri Kepayan on June 28.
The charge under Section 425 of the Penal Code provides for a jail sentence of up to five years, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Pleading for leniency, Basrie asked the court to consider his two young children and requested that the custodial sentence run concurrently with a separate drug-related sentence.
However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Shafeerah Mad Iskim pressed for a deterrent sentence, arguing that the act was premeditated and posed severe danger to both life and property.
