KOTA KINABALU: A man who shot his younger brother dead was himself killed by police after a tense standoff in a Tenom village.
The 54-year-old victim, a smallholder, was pronounced dead after sustaining eight gunshot wounds to the back in the 8 am incident on Sunday.
The 57-year-old suspect, believed to have used a homemade firearm known as a “bakakuk”, then threatened to shoot anyone approaching their house compound in Kampung Kangkawang.
Tenom district police chief Supt Azmir Abd Razak said police received a report about the shooting and the threats.
A cordon operation was launched at about 9.30 am, with police issuing three orders for the suspect to surrender, all of which were ignored.
“Several rounds of tear gas were fired into the house to force the suspect out, but he remained defiant and refused to cooperate despite further attempts,” Azmir said in a statement.
The situation escalated when the suspect suddenly ran towards the kitchen while pointing the firearm at an officer near a side window.
“The officer, acting in self-defence, fired three shots, hitting the suspect in the right arm, left chest and left ribs,” Azmir added.
The suspect collapsed in the kitchen area and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police seized several items at the scene, including parts of the homemade firearm, ammunition, spent casings and a machete.
The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder and Section 307 for attempted murder.
