Unemployed man denies deceiving victim into paying RM64,500 for a state title, court sets bail at RM5,000
SEREMBAN: A man pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate’s Court here today to a charge of cheating by allegedly offering to secure the Pingat Darjah Setia Bakti Negeri Sembilan, which carries the title Datuk, for a payment of RM64,500 last year.
Tengku Ahmad Ariff Mulia Tengku Daeng Bahaismail, 27, entered the plea after the charge was read before Magistrate Nurul Saqinah Rosli.
According to the charge, he is accused of deceiving the victim into making a payment to facilitate the process of obtaining the DBNS in conjunction with the 78th birthday of the Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan.
He is alleged to have committed the offence at Taman Nuri Indah here between March 30 and Dec 6 last year.
The charge, under Section 420 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years, whipping and a fine upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Hanis Anisha Jamilludin suggested bail be set at RM15,000; however, lawyer Chrysandy Lai, representing the accused, asked for a lower bail amount, saying that he is unemployed and needs to care for his mother following his father’s death.
The court allowed bail at RM5,000 in one surety and set June 3 for mention of the case.
