A Bangladeshi man running a grocery store and restaurant in Brickfields is now under investigation after a recent immigration raid exposed the use of undocumented foreign workers at his premises—despite the business earning him a staggering RM55,000 per month.

The 47-year-old foreign trader revealed during the raid that his successful business venture began after marrying a Malaysian woman. Authorities discovered that he had been employing three undocumented foreign nationals without work permits.

According to Kosmo!, the integrated raid, carried out between 9pm and 11pm, was part of a larger crackdown on illegal employment. The man claimed that the workers were not full-time employees, but were merely “helping out temporarily.” He admitted to paying them between RM45 and RM70 per day.

Despite his attempt to downplay the violation, enforcement officers found that the business had been running with the owner earning well above average monthly income. However, the use of undocumented workers placed him in clear violation of immigration laws.

The operation, led by the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department, resulted in the arrest of 17 individuals. These included 13 Bangladeshi men, two Pakistani men, one foreign employer, and two locals believed to be husband and wife. Kuala Lumpur Immigration Director Wan Mohammed Saupee Wan Yusoff confirmed that those detained were involved in various immigration offences, including overstaying, lacking valid documentation, misuse of visa permits, and harbouring illegal immigrants.

Legal action is now underway under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Immigration Regulations. Authorities also issued three Immigration Form 29 notices—witness summonses—to several employers for further investigation.

All those arrested, aged between 20 and 50, have been taken to the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Depot for processing and further legal procedures.

While Malaysia remains a land of opportunity for many migrants, this case serves as a reminder of the consequences that follow when regulations are ignored. Even with a thriving business and local ties, running afoul of immigration laws can bring serious repercussions.
