TAWAU: An 18-year-old man working at a coffee shop here has been remanded for five days to assist in police investigations into an alleged rape of a 14-year-old Form Two student, following the discovery of used condoms in her bedroom and school file.
Magistrate Dayang Aidaku Amira Aminuddin on Wednesday granted the remand order, from October 15 to 19, following an application by Inspector Robiatul Adawiyah Japri to facilitate investigations under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code.
According to the case details, the alleged rape came to light on October 8, 2026, at about 4.30pm, when the victim’s 43-year-old mother found a used condom in a storage compartment on the dressing table in her daughter’s bedroom.
The woman subsequently found another condom and lubricant inside a bag kept in her daughter’s school file at about 4.30pm on Oct 9.
On October 10, the mother lodged a police report at 7.20pm after her daughter admitted to having had sexual intercourse with her boyfriend, the suspect, on September 26.
The report led to the arrest of the local man by a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Tawau District Police Headquarters at about 5.20pm on Tuesday (October 13).
Meanwhile, during the remand proceedings, lawyer Nur Fadhilah Najihah Amir requested a shorter remand period for her client, stating that he worked at his grandmother’s coffee shop and could be easily contacted.
She said her client and the victim were in a romantic relationship and that there was no intention to cause harm.
