A man from Oregon has been apprehended by authorities after posing as an undercover police officer, kidnapping a woman in Seattle, and transporting her to his residence where he imprisoned her in an improvised cinder block cell. The incident occurred on July 15 and Negasi Zuberi, a 29-year-old individual from Klamath Falls, Oregon, now faces multiple felony charges, including interstate kidnapping, according to the Justice Department.
Further investigations have revealed potential connections between Zuberi and sexual assaults in at least four other states, prompting law enforcement officials to search for additional victims. During a news conference, Stephanie Shark, the assistant special agent in charge of the FBI's Portland field office, expressed growing concerns about the case.
She emphasized the possibility of more undisclosed victims, stating, "The more we delve into this case, the more worried we become as law enforcement that there may be overlooked instances." Law enforcement agencies are determined to conduct thorough backward investigations to uncover any potential victims who may have gone unnoticed. According to the FBI, Zuberi employed various aliases such as Sakima, Justin Hyche, and Justin Kouassi.
He embarked on a 450-mile journey from his residence in Oregon to Seattle, where he lured a prostitute by falsely presenting himself as a law enforcement officer. Allegedly, Zuberi used a laser pointer to intimidate the woman before restraining her with handcuffs and leg irons, ultimately forcing her into the back seat of his vehicle.
Throughout the trip, he subjected her to repeated sexual assault. Upon reaching his home in Klamath Falls, Zuberi confined the victim within a makeshift cell constructed with single-door access located in his garage.
After Zuberi departed the premises, the captive woman courageously banged on the door until she managed to escape a few hours later. Subsequently, she sought help from a passing motorist who promptly contacted emergency services. Authorities reported that the woman sustained some lacerations but was in stable condition. Following the woman's escape, Zuberi fled the scene and was subsequently apprehended in Reno, Nevada.
In a news release, Stephanie Shark commended the victim for her swift thinking and determination to survive, acknowledging that her actions may have potentially safeguarded other women from enduring similar nightmarish situations. The investigation into Zuberi's activities continues as law enforcement agencies work tirelessly to ensure the safety of other potential victims who may have fallen prey to his criminal behaviour.
