Man’s bid to jump off bridge foiled

BEAUFORT: A 39-year-old former soldier with mental issues was saved from a watery death when he tried to jump from the new bridge, here.

He was saved by an off-duty fireman who happened to be in the vicinity on Monday evening.

Beaufort OCPD Yusoff Zaki Yaacob said Mohd Rijaya Said jumped off the bridge after 6pm.

The head of the Fire & Rescue Department here, Muhammad Hasbullah Nenggok said his men received a call at 6.48pm.

“When my men reached the scene, the man was already on the river bank and saved by an off-duty fireman.

“The firemen then tried to calm the man down while waiting for the arrival of hospital staff and the Police,” he said.

Family members said the man had mental problems since 2020 and had sought treatment at the hospital before. He was supposed to go for his review soon.

Dr Ng Yen Yen who treated him confirmed that he was mentally disturbed and had records in the hospital.

He was retained in the hospital for further treatment.
