KUCHING: A 33-year-old man was shocked to discover more than RM1 billion had appeared in his bank account due to an apparent technical error on Wednesday, New Straits Times reported.Wan Muhammad Fairus, a clinic manager from Samariang, here, found RM1,000,315,879 credited to his account when he checked his online banking application on Wednesday, despite expecting a balance of less than RM1,000.
He later shared a screenshot of the transaction on Threads, which was labelled “Bank adjustment” under a cash reward campaign for Merdeka and Malaysia Day 2026, although he said he had not participated in any promotion that could explain the amount.
Fairus said he contacted the bank after suspecting a technical problem and was informed that his account would be temporarily blocked while the matter was resolved, adding that he never considered using the money because it did not belong to him.
He said the bank subsequently reversed the transaction without affecting his original balance and informed him that he might receive a reward for alerting it to the error, although he had yet to receive further details.
