Sana Yousaf, a 17-year-old TikToker from Pakistan, was tragically shot and killed at her home last June by a 22-year-old man whose advances she had repeatedly rejected.
The suspect, Umar Hayat, also a TikToker and the son of a public servant, was formally charged in court yesterday (20 September), but pleaded not guilty.
Umar was arrested shortly after Sana’s death and initially confessed to the murder, stating that Sana had rejected what he described as “offers of friendship.” However, during his court appearance in Islamabad, Umar denied all allegations, according to reports from the BBC and The Hindustan Times.
He also claimed that he had tried to meet Sana multiple times, but was unsuccessful.
On 2 June, Umar allegedly broke into Sana’s home, fired two shots at her with a pistol, and fled the scene after stealing her mobile phone.
According to another BBC report, Sana’s father and brother were not home at the time of the incident. Her aunt, who was present, mistook the gunshots for the sound of a balloon popping due to the muffled noise. Umar then attempted to shoot the aunt, but the gun failed to discharge. Sana, who was the only daughter in the family, died before she could be taken to the hospital.
Sana’s family stated that she had never mentioned Umar or any threats prior to the incident. Her final Instagram post showed her celebrating her birthday, just hours before her death.
Originally from the scenic northern region of Chitral, Sana was known for promoting traditional Chitrali music and attire through her TikTok channel. She also advocated for girls’ education.
