A shocking incident unfolded in Khalchian village here on Friday night after a girl allegedly shot her father over her desire to move abroad.
The victim, Harminder Singh, was engaged in prayers at home when his daughter, Snehdeep Kaur, reportedly took his licensed pistol and fired at him, injuring him in the back.
Family members and neighbours rushed him to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, where he remains under treatment.
According to the police, Kaur had completed her secondary education last year, and was insistent on moving to Australia for further studies. Her father opposed the idea, citing concerns about life and safety abroad. Some family members have denied of any such dispute, and relatives have claimed that she had been mentally unwell for several months, requiring constant supervision.
Police authorities said frequent arguments over migration had created tension within the household.
DSP Sukhpal Singh said an FIR has been registered in this regard, and the accused had been detained for further investigation.
Her mother, Manjeet Kaur, has appealed for the FIR to be cancelled, citing her daughter’s fragile mental health.
