KOTA BHARU: A man with multiple criminal records was shot and injured after attempting to attack police officers with a machete. The incident occurred in front of Universiti Teknologi MARA Machang.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said police received information about a shooting at the location at 11.17 pm. A crime prevention patrol team from the Machang district police headquarters rushed to the scene for inspection.
While checking two men behaving suspiciously, one acted aggressively by pulling out a machete. He swung the weapon at the policemen, forcing officers to fire several shots in self-defence.
The suspect was shot in the thigh but managed to flee the scene. He was later apprehended in a nearby area during a swift police operation.
He is currently receiving hospital treatment and is reported to be in stable condition. The suspect has been remanded for seven days, with no injuries reported among the police personnel.
However, the second suspect fled and police are actively working to track him down. Further checks at the scene led to the seizure of the machete used by the injured suspect.
The suspect’s criminal records include offences involving dangerous drugs and criminal intimidation. Other offences relate to corrosive substances, explosives, dangerous weapons, obstructing public servants, and domestic violence.
Mohd Yusoff added that the case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
