A man was shot dead in the western German town of Wassenberg late on Monday and the suspect or suspects remain at large, a police spokeswoman told dpa.
Police said there was no danger to the public.
According to initial information from police sources, a man got out of a car shortly before 8 pm (1800 GMT) and shot another man outside a house in the town, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The attacker then fled in the car, in which another man was believed to have been waiting, police said.
Authorities launched a large-scale manhunt, including the use of a helicopter, the police spokeswoman said.
