A man who shot and wounded a police officer in the western German city of Dortmund surrendered early on Wednesday after barricading himself for hours inside a flat with his three children, police told dpa.
The children were safe and in good condition given the circumstances, a police spokesman said.
The incident began on Tuesday evening when officers responded to an emergency call from a woman. Police said the 51-year-old suspect shot at an officer and then retreated to a flat with his children. The officer suffered minor injuries after a bullet struck his protective vest.
Special police units and negotiators were deployed as authorities worked to resolve the situation. Police had earlier described it as an ongoing threat but later gave the all-clear following the man's surrender.
The motive and circumstances surrounding the incident remained unclear.
Police did not confirm a report by German tabloid Bild that the man had been holding the children hostage.
Bild also reported that the suspect had caused a disturbance at a restaurant, threatened customers and used pepper spray before fleeing by car. As officers attempted to stop him, he allegedly fired through a window and hit a police officer. Police did not immediately confirm those details.
