
KOTA BELUD: A man feared drowned after being swept away by strong currents while bathing with friends in a river near a guesthouse in Kampung Tambatuon was found dead on Sunday morning.
The body of 24-year-old Abner Lasmel from Kiulu, Tuaran, was discovered by members of the public at about 7am, approximately 1.2 kilometres from where he was last reported missing.
Kota Belud Fire and Rescue Station chief Elge Bakuk said firefighters received information from villagers regarding the discovery while a search and rescue operation was ongoing.
He said the victim was believed to have been swept away by strong currents while bathing in the river near the Low Level Crossing bridge at about 6.10pm on Saturday, prompting a search operation using water surface search and rescue methods along the river.
Elge said the victim was confirmed dead at the scene before the body was handed over to police for further action, and the search and rescue operation was officially concluded at 10.20am.
